About this blog

This is a gameblog following my progress through the Nintendo DS game, Professor Layton and the Specter's Flute. Mostly I'm transcribing puzzles so I can use machine translation (Google Translate) to help me better comprehend what the puzzles are actually asking.

Ffffound!

I've gone through and found all the story puzzles! Hooray! I've gone and filled in the backlog of puzzles I missed when I was first transcribing, so this blog now lists puzzles 1-39, which should get you through the first few chapters.

できました!

I have finished the game!
I still plan to transcribe the puzzles, but I am planning on doing a second run through the game first. I'm also thinking of converting this blog into a more all-purpose informational site on the game, with notes on locations, characters, and plot points.

Story Puzzle 3: The Black Crow's Identity

After you access the Black Market, you go into an auction stage, where you encounter the Black Crow. You ask it about the Specter's Flute, but the Black Crow isn't about to give up information so easily.
Layton then reveals he knows the Black Crow's identity, but he promises to keep it a secret, hinting that he expects the Black Crow to help out in their investigation in gratitude. Remi and Luke are surprised by this, but Layton then asks them several multiple choice questions which lead up to the identity of the Black Crow.
The first question is aimed at Remi, he asks what the chase felt like --
Maybe the Black Crow is a champion runner, or was using ESP, or was pulling a trick on them.
Once you get this right, Layton then asks how the chase could have been pulled off -- by using mirrors, puppets/stand-ins, or by having more than one person.
Once you get this right, Layton reveals that during the chase, he noticed under the Black Crow's coat that there were some candies. Earlier you encountered a candy seller, who refuses to sell candy to adults. From this, Layton asks what you can assume of the Black Crow -- perhaps the Black Crow is a thief and stole the candy, or is actually a child and could buy the candy outright, or is a bully and forced the candy seller to sell some candy.
Once you solve all three questions, the story puzzle is solved, the identity of the Black Crow is revealed, and you learn more about the Specter's Flute!

Puzzle 039: Crow Medallions

If you want the information to the black market, a four and ask them to arrange the ceremony received a medal in the single form of crows. Now, I put the medal in a wooden frame. If you can sort of medal-shaped wooden frame as, black crow will be completed. Husband, I have justified the slate of Oke digit numbers.

Notes on Puzzle
Much of Chapter 3 is spent in the marketplace trying to find out a way to enter the Black Market, where the Specter's Flute was supposedly sold at auction a year ago. After you ask around the marketplace, you encounter a strange person dressed up in a dark robe and bird's mask, calling itself the "Black Crow". After leading you on a merry chase (wherein Remi pulls off some amazing athletics) the Black Crow disappears but drops you a little note, saying "Put my body back together." You ask around some more and find out that you must collect 4 Crow Medallions. Two you can get from denizens of the market place (after solving their puzzles of course!). The other two you must find by poking around the market. The two kids in front of the bakery give you one clue ("look around the point of the umbrella!") and the kid in the west side of the market gives you a second clue after you gain his medallion ("look around in chimneys.") Once you have all four, you bring the medallions back to the center of the marketplace and must "put the body back together" in a sliding puzzle. You need to move the four medallions, as well as 3 numbered blocks, so they are above their marked places in the box. I think this only takes about 20 moves or so at the minimum. Once you solve this puzzle you can access the Black Market!

Puzzle 038: Above-and-Below Maze

ナゾ038 裏表の迷路

There are toys made in the front and back of the maze. To start moving the table from the start of the maze, planted in a maze of switches back and fall into a hole. Well, that what people get to the finish?

Notes on Puzzle
This toy is like Labyrinth on crack. You have to maneuver a ball around a maze, however, when it drops through a hole the maze swaps to the other side, which has a different arrangement of maze walls. You have to guide the back to the goal space in the bottom right. You can apparently do this in as few as 8 moves.

Puzzle 037: 7 Gold Coins

Notes on Puzzle
You are given 7 coins arranged on a table. 5 are heads up; 2 are tails up. By moving just one coin, you can make the number of coins with heads up and tails up even. Note that you can also flip the coin you are moving, but you can only touch one coin.

Google Translate
Some people keep pets in a cage in the garden. Ramo Sawa is not a pet to anyone other than daily, and said it is time for cutting the food into two floors, there is no hard exit. It's not even a spear who are asking the food, the two can not throw out the food from the floor. Well, this person will be allowed and what? I answered in three katakana characters.

Notes on Puzzle
This puzzle describes the feeding schedule of this one person and their pet: every day the person climbs up to the 2nd floor in order to feed the pet. The person is not dropping or throwing the food. What kind of pet needs its owner to go to the 2nd floor just to feed it? The answer uses 3 katakana. My dictionary gave 2 3-katakana possibilities for this animal. To my chagrin, I chose the wrong one to answer the first time. Oh well.

You are given a box of candy with four different candy shapes: Hearts, Diamons, Spades and Clubs. You have to figure out how many of each candy shape are in the box. Note that some pieces look similar, so it's not quite as straightforward as you think.

There are four people standing about talking. One is holding a (honeydew) melon, one is holding some grapefruits, one is holding some bananas and one is holding some grapes. There's a thud and the two who had the grapefruits and melon go running off while the other two look on in confusion. From these clues you have to figure out where the four were standing around and talking. Although the clue says the answer is written in 4 hiragana, the game will apparently accept a few related answers; the longest answers use 4 hiragana.

Notes on Puzzle
You're given a 6x6 grid and need to traverse through the grid in a specific order. There are a couple of tiles with numbers of them. You must move through the grid so that when you hit the numbered tiles, that is how many tiles away you are from the start (ie you have to hit the tile numbered 6 as the 6th move). You can only move vertically/horizontally.
When you solve the puzzle, you may notice the path is not as random as it first seems.

Notes on Puzzle
A math puzzle with people's ages, standard fare. Three people; when you multiply their ages you get 36; when you add their ages you get 13. You already know the age of the youngest (it is given in the letter; if the youngest was born last March and the letter was written in April, then she is 1 year old) so it's pretty easy to figure out the ages of the older brother and sister.

Notes on Puzzle
You have to figure out what happens to fish when they get put in John's tank, aka why do they disappear? The answer (spelled out with 2 hiragana) is kind of sad.

After you solve this puzzle, you get the a pet fish! I named my fish “Nemo”. You also get access to the Fish minigame, which involved changing one 2-hiragana word into another. You give the hiragana to a fish, who eats it and spits out a new set of hiragana. At the top is a hiragana chart; the fish change the hiragana based on the chart. A fish can either switch the first and second hiragana, move the hiragana horizontally on the chart or vertically on the chart. I have no idea how this game would translate to English, which is alphabetic. Perhaps create a limited set of syllables and chart them? Hmm, it would be a bit tricky for sure.

You're given four tables with different numbers of food items (juice, toast and tea.) The total bill for each table is the same. The last table is missing one item; you must decide which food item should go on the table so that the value of the food matches the other three tables.

Puzzle 013: Water Fetching Relay

Google Translate
Fetching water park is a place in two ways. Now have two pieces from the bucket * to depart from the place of drawing water in place of water in each cup one-kun, on coming back as soon as possible. You do not pass through the same road with two degrees, courses will I be like? I want to draw a line in the corridor answer.

Notes on Puzzle
Find the shortest route through a maze, where you need to stop at two fountains (marked with an “X”) to fill your bucket. You cannot cross the same part of the path twice. The start and end is the same place, so it's a big loop.

Puzzle 012: Hotel Rooms

Google Translate
12 must be checked in the hotel inside the room with all rooms. Efficient to check the room without entering the same two degrees from the entrance, go through all the rooms to the exit. First glance seem to be so difficult, in fact its root is represented by the numbers because they can bring an end to the check without thinking. Those are great numbers and you know me.

Notes on Puzzle
You are given an overhead view of the hotel rooms. Almost all the rooms are connected to their neighbors except for one pair. After finding a route through the floor plan that crosses through all rooms once, you'll see the route itself spells out a number. The number is the answer.

Clearing out a backlog

I played a bunch of the game on the flight to SF, and on the BART ride home. I also clocked in another hour or so at home. So now I have a bunch of backlog to clear out! I also don't quite recall where the chapter breaks between 3 and 4 are now. I'll have to update the puzzle list later when I do a second run-through of the game (already I am missing some puzzles... :( And not all of them ended up with the puzzle cat, Keet.)

Google Translate
Here are some photos I took in the hill state. But the road taken by tilting the camera so that the horizon looks like. Well, see you on a hill to roll one? A, B answer by pressing one button.

Notes on Puzzle
You're given a photo of two people on bikes passing each other. The photo was taken on a hillside, but tilted so the horizon appears flat. Using other visual cues, you have to figure which direction is uphill.

Notes on Puzzle
A sliding box (or Klotski) puzzle, involving moving a key (2x1 block) through various blocks made of cheese.

Minigame: Train Course game

Yay! I just got the miniature train game unlocked! I love trains, so laying down track and watching the toy train run through it is very cute. When the train is running through the course you set down the view switches to isometric, which reminds me of the good ol' days of SimCity 2000.

The only instructions I received this note from Mr. Butler, I read there is f****** hard to write a memo or letter was sloppy in a hurry. "Please put the curtain 13." But, it says here, A * B * C * D and I only have the tags attached curtain. It takes a curtain or how good, can you see?

Notes on Puzzle
Simple logic puzzle. The butler writes a messy note asking for you to select curtain 13; you are given four sets of curtains labeled A, B, C and D to choose from. Also, I am somewhat amused at Google Translate's rather foul-mouthed machine translation.

Enjoying the animation and voice acting

I'm having rather a lot of fun with this game already, even though I'm only 1 hour and 8 puzzles in. I've been mostly able to get through the puzzles without too much difficulty (although that 45-picarat puzzle 7 was a doozy!) The animation is really smooth and clean, and if it's any indication the movie should be a visual delight.
I like that even the 'static' characters images that appear when Layton is talking with someone else are smoothly animated. In Curious Village the characters basically stood around, did one or two characteristic moves and changed their facial expressions. In Specter's Flute the characters move around more in response to what they are saying, which helps emphasize the conversation more and feels less like a picture book.
The voice acting took a little getting used to (I love whoever does Layton's British voice, but I am glad not to be subjected to Luke's not-so-cockney accent). Actually, from the few scenes I've seen where Luke talks, he reminds me of Kino from Kino's Journey. Perhaps once he's not acting so sulky that will change.
The new character, Remi Altava, has so far been quite amusing, and not so hero-worshippy like Luke was in Curious Village. A strong independent woman, I hope she will hold her own against Layton and Luke. Also, I give her major props for being to pull off a yellow ensemble.
I am going to have a lot of fun with this game on the flight to San Francisco....!

Story Puzzle 2: Door Puzzle

You first meet Luke in his room. However, he has locked himself away, and won't open the door for you. He tells you that surely the great Professor Layton will have no trouble figuring out this puzzle. There are a number of items around the door you can click on and learn more about. However, something around the door is odd. When you are ready, you tell Luke, who gives you 15 seconds to figure out (and tap) the item that is odd. Once you are successful, Luke will open the door and talk to you.
This is both a visual puzzle (which of the items around the door are important?) and logic (what makes the item important? What is Luke really asking you to do?) The 15-second time limit is an interesting twist to keep you on your toes.

Puzzle 008: In the Mirrors

Google Translate
I wandered into a room, there was a strange night that 14 had been placed in the single-sided mirror. On the floor "and then teaches how the arrows should go bigger." Laser pointer has been placed and written notes and had written a small arrow on the floor. A ~ D will be the next way to go anywhere.

Notes on Puzzle
You're given an arrangement of mirrors, and a laser light source. When the laser bounces off the mirrors, it sketches out an arrow, which points in one of the four cardinal directions. A fairly straightforward puzzle, as long as you're used to drawing light paths bouncing off mirrors.

Puzzle 007: Cleaning Mops

Mop with this one once a day, after 30 days in a row and do the cleaning, the mop will need something from your book?

Notes on Puzzle
A tricky logic puzzle, asking you how many mops you need to use if you want to clean continuously for 30 days (these are some pretty crappy mops. I mean, it takes two days to dry out and each time you use them they start breaking down? Yeesh. That's what a Swiffer is for!) I "solved" it by going forwards and backwards from my original number until I got the right answer. There's a fairly good leap in logic that I didn't get. I'm not sure whether it was just me being a dunce, or me not fully understanding the conditions in Japanese.

Puzzle 006: Post Box Panel

When you open the post and fell from the side panels come off. Panel "POST" but as it had been written and I'm not sure if 並Betara restored back into shape.
Sort and get back to its original form the panel.

Notes on Puzzle
You bad person, you. You just knocked off the fancy lettering on Clark's mailbox! Now you have to put it back together. Having just tackled the luggage-in-a-cart puzzle, this isn't very different, except you don't need to rotate any pieces, and there will be blank spots in the panel that spell out the word "POST".

Puzzle 005: River Crossing

Translation
You need to take one dog, two cats and three chicks across the river. You can only take two animals with yourself at any time. You cannot leave the dog and cats together on their own, as the dog will chase the cats; you cannot leave the chicks and cats together on their own as the cats will chase the chicks (it is in their nature.)
Can you cross the river with all of your animals?

Notes on Puzzle
A standard river crossing puzzle. The logic for these doesn't change much.
The shortest number of moves you need to transport the animals is 7.

Puzzle 004: Reload the Luggage

Google Translate

Notes on Puzzle
This puzzle is given to you by a lady whose cart has tipped and dropped all her luggage on the ground. She has a habit of repeating her words when she talks (hence the "Onegai no onegai yo.") You need to rearrange her luggage so it all fits in a neat grid. In this puzzle you need to rotate some of the pieces so they fit.
I only wish my own luggage came in neat squares for packing.

Story Puzzle 1: Bridge Puzzle

The first story puzzle takes place as Layton and Remi are trying to cross a bridge. The bridge is blocked off by a set of ropes tied in a lattice. Layton looks at the ropes and says that you only have to cut one of them to open up the route again. You are given about 6 options of which rope to cut.

4 boxes which will meet two conditions?

Notes on puzzle
The image is of 16 boxes in a 4x4 grid. 8 boxes are bare wooden crates, the other 8 are red travel luggage cases. The puzzle sets up conditions and you have to find the box which matches all 4.

Puzzle 002: Four Photographs

Notes on puzzle
Basically, there are four photos of different people. Each photo has some slightly different details in the background. You need to select the three photos that are a group: the three who came and took a photo at the same time; the fourth is a photo taken at the same place but at a different time.

Now I am waiting for the arrival of you at home.

Notes on puzzle
The text is the content of the letter itself. The instructions for the puzzle are basically, "There is a hidden message in the letter Layton received from his friend Clark Triton. What is it?" The letter sets up the plot for the game, calling Layton to Clark's hometown to solve the mystery of a giant being that is smashing it up.
As a language puzzle, it must be solved in Japanese, so the letter translation isn't going to be of any use (except perhaps to introduce what's going on.) The answer is composed of 8 hiragana/punctuation letters. It's easier to solve in-game when the furigana readings over the kanji are available.

Puzzle Types

Here are a list of tags I'm using to denote specific puzzle types. Not having much background in brainteasers except an enjoyment in trying to solve them, the classifications are not very scientific, but should give you an idea of what is involved.
For some puzzle types I am using the terms as put forth by tvtropes which appears to maintain a very nice list.
I've also tagged each puzzle with their Picarat value. Generally, the more Picarats you can gain from solving a puzzle, the harder it is.

About this blog

I recently purchased Professor Layton and the Specter's Flute (レイトン教授と魔神の笛). I want to see the Layton movie due out in early 2010 (Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva) which I read was a continuation of Specter's Flute.
Unfortunately, my Japanese comprehension is not up to solving tricky riddle puzzles. At #7 (a 45 picarat puzzle!) I got confused. I couldn't figure out whether my wrong answers were due to a flaw in logic, or a flaw in Japanese comprehension. [Note: I think it was both.] I decided to type out all the puzzles and use Google Translate to get a better sense of what the puzzle was asking.
Since I was typing and Google Translating I figured I would put everything into a blog for future reference and for others who may be interested in the game, especially for those who, like me, need help with their Japanese comprehension but are unwilling to wait a year or more to buy an official English translation. I will also include notes on the puzzle as time permits. I will try not to provide any direct solutions, so do not consider this a walkthrough or anything of the sort.
For more information on Specter's Flute you should probably check places like Wikipedia.
